March 16, 2020

Dear LCCS Families,

I hope that our first day of Distance Learning is going as well as it can be for you - I’m sure it’s a crazy time around everyone’s kitchen tables and living rooms. We’re hearing great things from our teachers about how it’s going on their end, and we can see from the Google Classroom that students are active and engaged, so we are feeling optimistic.

A few very important notes:

  • We’re still working out some of the details about our daily check-in/attendance calls. If you have not received a call by noon,  don't worry. Please email Ms. Jackson at djackson@lccsnj.org to let her know if your student is working or ill.

  • There was so much interest in our Zoom call yesterday that we’ve added another session.

  • You probably have seen Jersey City’s announcement that it was closing all bars restaurants, theaters, etc. (Click here.) We know lots of parents are wondering whether it’s still ok to have friends over for playdates. Nurse Monya says, unfortunately for now, her advice is no playdates, working together on homework in person, sleepovers, and visits to public places

    • “Breaking isolation weakens the effect of closing schools and other public sites. Coronavirus doesn't switch gears from school to a birthday party--it can still be there, unseen! It's definitely a challenge for families but if we can do this now, we can prevent medical over-burden and save lives.” -- Nurse Monya

  • For a little bit of fun: Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day - so we’ll be doing a virtual celebration. Tomorrow morning there will be a post on our Facebook page where you can comment with photos of your students wearing their green if you want to share! (You can also email them to Jen Hughes at jhughes@lccsnj.org

We'll be sending information on conferences tomorrow. Thanks again for all your support - we truly appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Dear LCCS Families,

A few important reminders as we go to distance learning from tomorrow, Monday March 16 through at least March 30:

  • We will be taking attendance by having an LCCS staff member call your primary phone number between the hours of 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. Please answer calls that might come from an “unknown number” during that time, as we are using Google voice. If your student is ill and unable to work, let us know.

  • While teachers will be available throughout the day for questions on work that is posted on Google Classroom, they are also adding set “office hours” specifically for phone calls and emails. Click here for that schedule.

  • Keep an eye out early this coming week for an email/text about conferences. Remember they will be on phone/video chat. We’ll have more details soon.

  • As a way to keep our “Community” strong in Learning Community Charter School, we’ll be posting special content on our Facebook page (click here) on set days from our instrumental music teacher (Mondays) Spanish (Tuesdays) Art (Wednesdays) Gym (Thursdays) and Music (Fridays.) In addition I’ll be doing a special Facebook live “Principal’s Post” every day at 8:30 a.m.

If you have any questions or concerns about our Distance Learning plan, I’ve set up a Zoom video conference call for tonight from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. Zoom is free and can be used on your phone, tablet, or computer.

Dear LCCS Families,

We are so proud of how hard our staff has been working today and all week as we deal with this quickly changing situation as we will be closed March 16-March 30 as a precaution due to COVID-19.

It covers everything, and includes tips on how to make distance learning successful. This is a living document, and we could be making changes as the next two weeks unfold, and will update you as soon as we can.

QUICK FAQ

How will this work? All students will be assigned work posted on and then submitted back through the online platform, Google Classroom. Coursework will vary based on grade, but - for example - a Kindergarten teacher might post several math assignments that are due back in a few days. A 3rd Grade teacher might put up a reading and essay assignment due at the end of the week. A 5th Grade’s science work could be to watch a video and then answer questions.

What contact will I have with my child’s teacher? Lots! First off - LCCS staff will be calling every morning for attendance between 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. Note that you should be seeing a call from a number you might not recognize during that time - please answer! Teachers will also post in their Google classroom set times for two hours of “office hours” daily when they are available for calls, emails, and video chats.

I have no idea how to use Google Classroom? How can I get help? Email Maurren Rexer at mrexer@lccsnj.com.

Will these days count toward the 180 we need to have a full school year? Yes. We will not need to push into the summer to “make up” any lost time.

We are very grateful for our fantastic team who put this together and to all our teachers who are dedicated to working so hard for your students. All administrators are here to support our staff, our students, and you.

I will be hosting a Zoom online meeting along with Ms. Rexer on Sunday evening March 15 from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. to answer any questions you may have about this process. Zoom is free and can be used on your phone, tablet, or computer.

We talk a lot at LCCS about our CIRCLE values - Community, Independence, Respect, Courage, Leadership and Effort - so much that it seems maybe sometimes that the meaning gets lost. These past few days have really shown that this is more than a motto at LCCS.

Sincerely,

Colin Hogan, Head of School
