Children are always very interested in clothes. We will be talking about how clothes are made, how to put them on and take them off with snaps, buttons, zippers, etc. We will compare types of clothing and different fabrics, explore different cultures, clothing, and even design some of our own clothing! As we study clothes, we will learn concepts and skills in literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, and technology. We’ll also use thinking skills to investigate, ask questions, solve problems, make predictions, and test our ideas.

We need your help to gather a collection of clothes to investigate!

We need clean clothes of all sizes, types, colors, and fabrics.  Here’s a list of suggestions, but you may also send in clothes that are not on this list. Please label the clothes with your name so we can return them to you at the end of the study. We promise to take good care of them!

What you can do at home

Talk with your child about clothes. Examine the fabrics together and discuss how the clothes were made. Look at pictures from the past and note how the clothing differs from clothing today.

Start a small sewing project with your child. You can use a large plastic needle and yarn; make stitches on burlap or felt.

While you shop for clothes, help your child notice how clothes are organized in the store and offer a simple explanation of how you compare prices.
