Fifth Grade Math!

My name is Marie Van Der Horn (also known as Ms. VDH), and I teach 5th Grade Math. I have been a part of the LCCS community for the last 14 years. When I am not solving math problems, I love to sing, explore new sights, and spend time with friends and family. My students quickly learn my favorite color is purple, I love to have fun, and I love coffee and Chinese take-out. Before teaching 5th Grade, I taught Kindergarten for 12 years. I do all I can to infuse the fun of Kindergarten into learning division, fractions, and problem solving. I believe in working and playing hard. At LCCS, I also work with the Musical Theater Department and I am the adviser of the LCCS Chapter of National Junior Honor Society. As a teacher, I hope to inspire every student to be their very best version of themselves.

Grading

Grades will be calculated using the following percentages for each category:

30% Tests

20% Quizzes

20% Homework

20% Projects

10% Classwork/Participation

Grades will be updated at least every two weeks and can be accessed via the Student Portal. Letter Grade Percentage Range

Projects

Students will be assigned one or two (possibly three depending on the units of study) projects per marking period. Most of the projects will be completed at home, but there may be an occasional project completed in class. Rubrics will be provided with the project details to guide your completion.

Homework

Homework is usually assigned Monday-Thursdays, however, there is an occasional weekend assignment. Homework is given as a review of the classwork completed that day.
