Administration Bios

    Colin Colin Hogan - LCCS Head of School

Colin Hogan is Head of School at Learning Community Charter School.  From 2010-2013 he was the Social Studies Coordinator for the Highland Park School District.  He taught 6th grade history in Highland Park from 2004-2010.  Prior to coming to Highland Park Mr. Hogan taught at Princeton Charter School.  Mr. Hogan began his career in education in 1999 teaching at the Academy of Communications and Technology and at the Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School in Chicago.  He has won numerous awards for teaching and was recognized as New Jersey History Teacher of the Year in 2013.  Before becoming a teacher he worked as a community organizer in both Israel and New York City.  Mr. Hogan earned his Bachelor of Arts in History at Indiana University, pursued graduate studies in Early Adolescent Education at Bank Street College of Education, and at the NJExcel program.  Mr. Hogan currently serves as President-Elect of the Kean University Diversity Council.  

     James  James Laster - LCCS Assistant Head of School  

James Laster has had the honor of serving the families of Jersey City by educating students at Learning Community Charter School for his entire professional career, spanning 11 years.  After graduating from Rutgers University with a BA in Africana Studies and an EdM in Social Studies Education in 2003, Mr. Laster was hired at LCCS as a middle school social studies teacher.  He went on to gain certification as a middle school mathematics teacher and taught 7th and 8th grade math for several years.  In 2011, while working on completing his EdM in Education Administration at Kean Unive
rsity, Mr. Laster fulfilled his desire to have a larger impact on the school community by serving as Middle School Coordinator and Dean of Students.  After earning his degree in May of 2012, he became the Assistant Head of School at Learning Community.

Francine Strauss

LCCS PreK Director

Francine Strauss has been employed by LCCS for the past twelve years as an early grades reading specialist and in addition  as the Pre-Kindergarten coordinator and supervisor for the past three years .Prior to coming to LCCS Fran was employed by the New York City Board of Ed as a pre-k teacher specialist and reading recovery teacher. She received her Masters in Early Childhood Education and Professional Diploma in Supervision and Administration from Bank Street College of Education where she also worked for a year as a a teacher trainer. During that year Fran also consulted with District 15 (NYC) where she initiated and implemented their Pre-k program. Prior to being a consultant Fran  was a day care director (Ossining Children's Center- three years) and taught in various early childhood settings( six years).

Jennifer Hughes

Director of Development and Communications 

Jen Hughes joined LCCS family in 2008 when her daughter was accepted into kindergarden. Starting that year, she was a volunteer coordinating the school's Spring Gala, and she was hired as Development Director in 2014. She oversees all fundraising at the school, including events and sales, and also handles grant writing, community outreach and public relations. Additionally she manages internal and external communications, and writes and designs the schools publications. 

For the past 20 years she has worked as a newspaper reporter, covering crime in Lansing, Michigan, working in the Washington D.C. bureau for The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer, writing about local government for The Philadelphia Inquirer, and covering courts and legal affairs for The (Bergen) Record. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, The (Newark) Star-Ledger, Columbia Law School Report, New Jersey Monthly,, and National Real Estate Investor.
